Standard SI5 Project Client Server Rules

SI5 uses an intelligent file management process to determine which files will move between client and server.  The following is a high level description of this interaction.

1)    Projects can only be checked out by one user at a time.

2)    Projects must be checked out to Add files to the project

3)    Reports can be run on projects that are checked out by another user.

4)    The first time a project is checked out, all dtl and dtlrev files are copied to the local projects folder.

5)    Drawings and Other Project files are copied to the Local folder when:

6)    User opens the file

7)    User executes the “Get Latest” command

8)    Only files that have changed will be copied to/from the server.  If you modify the Project File and check in the project, the Dtl file will be copied the server.  If you open this project before it is modified by another user, the local project file will be used and no data is copied from the server.

Files and Projects

All file management will be handled in the Navigator.  The Import Project function on the Projects tab of the Navigator allows the user to browse to SI 4 and SI 5 projects to import.  SI 4 project will be converted to SI 5 format during this process.

Only one application (Text, Visio or AutoCAD) can be open at a time for a given project.

Text dtl files and Visio vsd files have similar functionality.  In Text and Visio you can have multiple projects open but only one file can be open per project at a time.  In AutoCAD you can have multiple drawings (dwg files) open for the same project but only one project can be open at a time.

To create a new project you can select Create Project, or go to File - New Project, or use right click – New Project..  The Project Information dialog will open.  After entering the data, a dtl file for the new project will be created.  Visio and AutoCAD files can then be created by right clicking New AutoCAD or New Visio, or by selecting New AutoCAD or New Visio from the Explorer bar on the left.
