J-STD-710 and SIA Plan Shapes

Details

The J-STD-710 Audio, Video and Control Architectural Drawing Symbols was created by the CEA/CEDIA R10WG7 Residential Systems Documentation Working Group.  More info can be found here.  The SIA symbols are based on the SIA Architectural Graphics Standard - CAD Symbols for Security Layour - Release 2.0.  More info on these symbols can be found here

This J-STD-710 symbol set consists of nine disciplines that we have broken down into nine separate Visio stencils (AutoCAD next)  These disciplines are:

  1. Audio-Video
  2. Communications
  3. Control
  4. Electrical
  5. Electronic  Safety and Security
  6. Furnishings
  7. Generic
  8. HVAC
  9. Vacuum Cleaning Systems

The SIA Symbols consist of nine categories that we have broken down into nine separate Visio stencils.  These categories are:

  1. Access Control
  2. Annunciation Console Panel
  3.  Barriers and Vehicle Control
  4. Combination Devices
  5. Communications
  6. Door and Locking Hardware
  7. Sensors
  8. Surveillance
  9. Switches

These new stencils will show up in the D-Tools section of the SIX stencil tree.

When building these new shapes we tried to follow the written specification as closely as possible.  These are the commonalties between all the new shapes.

  • Flexible text attributes.  Each symbol has specific Device Options relating to the function of the item that the symbol represents.  These device options came direct from the specifications.
  • Flexible call out tags.  Each symbol has a moveable note tag that can be filled with user generated free form text as needed.
  • Uniform size with an option to freely resize.  The specification calls for symbols to be .25 inch.  In addition some symbols are specified to be "stretchable" so each symbol can be resized freely as needed by the user.  These symbols ARE NOT designed to be scale or be attached to the dimensions database in D-Tools.
  • Pre assembled symbol legends for all categories of symbols with all of the device options
  • General Mount attributes on specific symbols.  The J-STD-710 specification does not call out which devices get these mount options or which options are specific to a specific device.  We added these mount options to all of the logical devices that could be mounted.  If the working group documents mount options by device we can make these changes to future versions.
  • Pre assembled symbol legends for all categories of symbols with all of the device options shown
  • Custom colors for both the fill and line color

Shape Data UI

All shapes share the same Shape Data UI options.  In the case of the speaker symbol below I have edited this UI to show a wall mount subwoofer with a green fill  and a blue line.

A subset of the Shape Data UI is also available as a right click option on each symbol.  The functionality remains the same as the same option in the Shape Data UI.

Legends

Each category/stencil has two Legend shapes.  One shape, "Legend Fixed Size Editable", is a Visio grouped shape that can not be resized but can be edited.  This shape only works at 1/4" to 1" scale.  The other, "Legend Resizable", is a single shape that can be resized but is not editable.  This shape works at all scales.  Each legend has the symbol shape, The symbol name and the device options.  The M and DO on the symbol designate whether the symbol has mount and device options.  The Legend Fixed Size Editable shape is hidden from the stencil tree but can be accessed by opening up the stencil and following these steps:

  1. Right click on the stencil you want to open for editing in the shape tree, choose the open stencil option.  THis will open the stencil for editing in Visio.
  2. Right Click on the stencil header and choose Edit
  3. Double click the shape you want to edit, this will open in a new window.
  4. Right Click on the shape in the new window and choose Group>>Open Group.  This will open the open a new window with what looks like the same shape but the individual elements can be edited.
  5. Edit as needed
  6. Close Group window, close edit window>>Yes to save to stencil
  7. if you want a resizeable version of the shape that was just edited drag the new shape on to a blank page and save the Visio file as a WMF.  Use the Visio Insert Picture command to insert the WMF that was just saved on to the drawing page.
  8. Drag new shape on to the open stencil, name it and save stencil.
